OUR TILE INSTALLATION PROCESS
It has been our experience that tile is no more than a decorative covering on a properly prepared surface. Tile King of San Diego sets all materials in accordance with the Tile Council of North America guidelines. This council sets standards throughout the tile industry. These guidelines insure a long lasting and beautiful tile job. Every tile project can have a variety of different methods of installation. We will take in consideration your budget and any time restrictions you may have. We will then help you decide witch method is right for you.
Shower tile over cement backer board:
The most common backer boards used in San Diego are Wonder board and Hardi board. With this installation method, cement board sheets are attached to the wall studs as a tile substrate. A waterproof membrane or (vapor barrier) is installed underneath the backer board. All seams and joints are taped with, alkali resistant mesh tape. The new tile is then installed. This method meets tile industry standards and is a great choice when it comes to keeping the cost down.
Dense shield is a product that is similar to Wonder board and Durarock. This board product has a vapor barrier installed from the manufacturer.
With Dense shield all joints are caulked per manufacture installation instructions. This method is also very durable and cost effective.
Mud float shower is the best method available. Floating shower walls is almost a lost art. Tile King of San Diego has over 21 years of experience with this method of installation. We have done hundreds of them. With this method a waterproof membrane is first installed. Metal lath is then nailed to studs and cement is floated onto the walls. Your new tile will be installed with only the best setting materials in the industry. This will insure a long lasting and beautiful tile job.

Tile over concrete:
In San Diego concrete slab or (Slab on Grade) construction is very common. When installing tile over concrete, slab preparation is critically important. The existing slab substrate must be free of any foreign materials and thoroughly cleaned prior to the tile installation. Tile King of San Diego also offers concrete leveling. We are able to grind down high spots or humps that may be in the slab. We can also fill in any dips or low spots that may exist.
Cracks in the slab will be treated with a crack isolation membrane or (Slip Sheet). This Slip Sheet will help any movement in the slab from transferring though the tile surface. Tile over wood sub floor:
Installation of tile directly to a wood surface can be done successfully. However Tile King of San Diego believes that this method of installation should be avoided whenever possible. Wood tends to swell, warp and delaminates when it is exposed to moisture. The use of a tile backer boards is a simple and common solution to this issue. All backer boards we install are secured with 1 1/4 inch roofing nails over a modified thin set bed. Many factors must be taken into account when deciding which application is right for you.
